Victor Wembanyama

An introduction to 2023 star draft prospect Victor Wembanyama Jan 24, 2022 at 3:14 pm ET • 6 min read victor-wembanyama-1.jpg Getty Images Nothing Victor Wembanyama does on a basketball court looks normal. The phenom from France stands at a towering 7-foot-2 with a 7-foot-9 wingspan. Blocking shots is second nature to him. When teams target him in a switch on the perimeter, it's the equivalent of watching Rudy Gobert try to defend Kevin Hart on a nerf hoop. With long and gangly arms, even when he's out of position he's able to turn and recover as well as any big man prospect in the sport. At just 18 years old, Wembanyama might be the reason your favorite NBA team is accumulating draft assets for the future. (Looking your way, Oklahoma City.) Wembanyama's not eligible for the NBA Draft until 2023, so the race to "Waive Wins for Wembanyama" (catchy, maybe?) isn't officially on, but the rare combination of his length, shot-blocking, scoring, size and versatility has him among the most intriguing prospects on planet Earth. Here's more evidence why. Wembanyama's disruptive length In the FIBA U19 World Cup gold medal game against Team USA last year, Wembanyama had 22 points and eight rebounds while swatting eight (YES: EIGHT!!) shots. His length was bothersome to even the best of USA's talent, including potential No. 1 pick in 2022 Chet Holmgren, another gangly big who Wembanyama outplayed in an MVP-caliber performance (before Holmgren went on to win MVP honors). On offense, simply staying in front of Wembanyama and fronting him to defend the entry pass is not enough. Look here how he gets behind Holmgren -- a listed 7-footer who is averaging 3.4 blocks per game for Gonzaga as a true freshman and has elite defensive potential -- for a clean look at the rim. Wembanyama misses the tap-in over the top, but gets fouled in the process by Holmgren, going on to make both free throws. He finished the game a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Staying in front of him doesn't work, either. With the ball in his hands he has the shake and bake of a wing. Check out how he puts this poor Lithuanian defender into a blend cycle as he takes one dribble from just beneath the free throw line, drop-steps and is at the cup for an easy finish, absorbing contact for an and-one in the process. In most cases, simply throwing the ball at the rim and in the general vicinity of Wembanyama is a winning play. He's not just a lob threat; he's virtually an automatic bucket with a catch radius that puts D.K. Metcalf to shame. What looks like an overthrow here for Wembanyama -- and for probably most players in basketball -- turns into an easy flush for him. Another example here from the FIBA U19 gold medal game. Wembanyama sheds Holmgren in a switch, and France's point guard tosses a lob with Wembanyama at the free throw line. It turns into an uncontested dunk because -- seriously -- how many people in the world could contest this? Shot-blocking second nature If you hand-selected one pro prospect to be the assigned selfie-taker of a large group, Wembanyama's the No. 1 pick with a bullet. His wingspan would rank third-widest among all prospects measured at the NBA Draft Combine since 2000 (behind Tacko Fall and Mo Bamba). So because of his length and wiry arms -- coupled with amazing timing and mobility -- Wembanyama by nature is a shot-blocking sorcerer. Remember how I mentioned earlier that he can be out of position but still leverage his length to recover? Here's one example. He gets backed down off a drive and gets too deep, swallowed under the basket, but he loads quickly, springs to the shot and with an outstretched left arm throws the shot attempt out of bounds. Here's another example from a different game. Notice below as he gets caught up in a screen in the post yet even as his man catches the ball for what looks to be enough room to get off a hook shot, Wembanyama is there just in time to throw an arm up. The shot goes undeterred for a foot or so before being met with an emphatic swat. Against Lithuania in the FIBA U19 World Cup, this play in particular nearly popped my eyes out of socket. The volleyball style swat and secure is one thing; the recovery to stay in bounds and the response to sprint the floor and finish is another. This sequence is one of the many he'll flash in games in which he affects both ends of the floor as a two-way force. Good luck switching By good luck I mean, seriously, good luck. Against Enes Kanter or Derrick Favors, drawing them out on the perimeter and putting them in a pick-and-roll might be how you can attack on offense. Against Wembanyama, it's asking for trouble. Below, Lithuania's point guard got Wembanyama switched onto him at the top of the key then tried every herky-jerky move in his bag before Wembanyama bent down for a kind, casual swat. This point guard from Spain didn't get the same kind treatment. After floating out on the perimeter via a switch, Wembanyama stays in front of his man then detonates the shot at the rim. When you do that a few times, you get into players' heads. You start calculating if you have enough room to get a shot off. This is the Wembanyama tax you pay playing against him -- the discomfort of knowing that at any time your shot is liable to find a place in the second row of the bleachers. The threat of that alone is enough to force even the most intelligent players into wicked and wild shots. Such is the impact a player of his caliber can make, affecting plays even if in the stat sheet it doesn't count for anything. Offensive versatility If blocking shots, switching screens and using all of his 7-foot-9 wingspan isn't enough to make Wembanyama a special talent, what he can do on offense -- beyond just finishing lobs -- surely is. The casual spin cycle I showed earlier pales in comparison to this move on Holmgren. Notice how he fakes right, drops back left into the center of the paint then goes up -- wayyy up -- for the sky hook over Holmgren's long arms. The shot extends beyond the paint, too. The footwork in this play is a tad clumsy, but check how he puts a defender at his back then fades into the baseline for an and-one. The 3-point shot isn't a regular in his repertoire, but that appears to be only a volume problem for Wembanyama and not a value problem. He made 37% of his 3s last season with Nanterre (though he went 4-of-22 in the U19s) on 46 attempts. Casually pulling up from the logo like Damian Lillard is not a shot he's afraid to take (and can make). What's jarring is how quickly, and easily, he can unload the shot. He has 3-and-D potential as a 7-foot center. Quick load, smooth, high release and the beautiful follow-through. A lot can change between now and June 2023, when he is eligible to be drafted. And injuries have been an off-and-on constant background concern. But nearly two years out, it's clear Wembanyama is the early frontrunner to go No. 1 and might be considered the best-long term non-NBA prospect in basketball regardless of level. He can block shots and make shots. He can defend the perimeter and make shots on the perimeter. There's nothing, at 18 years old, that he can't do, even if he lacks the seasoning and zest to be declared a generational talent. Over the next year-plus as he continues to develop, there's likely to be intense jockeying for position to win him as a reward at the top of the draft. From Deep: Kawhi Leonard returns to a Clippers team that is loaded -- maybe overloaded -- with options From Deep: Kawhi Leonard returns to a Clippers team that is loaded -- maybe overloaded -- with options Smallball! Switching! Spacing! Shapeshifting! The Clippers are the most 2022 team imaginable James Herbert By James Herbert Oct 7, 2022 at 11:11 am ET • 8 min read Watch Now: NBA Preseason Round Up (43) The NBA does not award a Most Versatile Team trophy. The word "optionality" is in vogue around the league, though, because playing just one way doesn't work anymore. Championship teams must win four series, which might require four drastically different rotations. Contenders want to be able to deal with zones, traps, drops, switches, size, speed, spacing and physicality. The Los Angeles Clippers can do all of that because they have it all: superstars and super-subs, spacers and slashers, creators and connectors. They have point forwards and stretch 5s, movement shooters and downhill drivers. They have the ability to play lineups big and small, fast and slow, orthodox and oddball. To the Clippers, flexibility is a weapon -- coach Tyronn Lue is known for playoff adjustments as much as he is for the Iverson stepover -- and it is armor. Their depth makes them less vulnerable to injuries, matchup problems and specific schemes. In the 2021 playoffs they fell down 0-2 in consecutive series, but they had countermoves. Their most powerful move was going positionless. By the end of both series, 7-foot center Ivica Zubac was relegated to spot duty. They listed the 6-foot-8 Nicolas Batum as the starting center, but, against Dallas, Batum was the one shutting down 6-foot-1 jitterbug Jalen Brunson. Defensively, the Clippers were long, active and disruptive. Offensively, they made the game simple: Space the floor, then attack a weak defender. Even after their franchise player tore his ACL, Utah had no counter. Kawhi Leonard is returning to a team that can lean harder in that direction. A lineup of Leonard, Paul George, Robert Covington, Marcus Morris and Batum has the same interchangeability and collective wingspan as any of the chaotic combinations on display in Toronto, with superior shooting and star power. Norman Powell, who last teamed with Leonard on the 2019 Raptors, said at media day that he sees some similarities between these Clippers and those NBA champions. Powell also said that he has his eyes on a starting spot and an All-Star appearance. The latter is a particularly lofty goal on a team like this. With rare exceptions, players and coaches don't complain about their teams being too talented. Since Leonard's injury, though, the Clippers have added Powell, Covington and John Wall. Reggie Jackson averaged 31 minutes last season, Terance Mann averaged 29, Luke Kennard averaged 27 and Amir Coffey averaged 23. Lue has already talked to the team about sacrifice, but that conversation is less fraught before the scarcity of playing time and touches becomes real. "It's not going to be easy," Lue said. "It's going to be a process because we have a deep team with 11, 12 guys that deserve to play and we know we can't play that many guys every night." Lue also said he's excited about the challenge, as he should be. You can coach for a lifetime and never get to piece together a puzzle like this. The conversation Clippers believer: You know how baseball teams sometimes play split-squad games in spring training? That's what the Clippers should do during the regular season. I've never seen a roster like this, and I have no idea how to construct a normal rotation that doesn't exclude several players who are obviously too good to just sit out. For a team that manages loads in the regular season and shifts shapes in the playoffs, I don't even think this is such a radical idea. Clippers skeptic: You've never seen a roster like this? Yeah, the Clippers are deep, but spare me the hyperbole. Unless you're infatuated with Brandon Boston Jr., Amir Coffey and Moussa Diabate, I see just as many rotation-caliber players on this year's Knicks, if not more. One of them is Isaiah Hartenstein, who was the Clippers' best reserve last year. In fact, Hartenstein was their most productive player overall in terms of RAPM and they were significantly better on both ends with him on the court than without him in 2021-22. For all of this supposedly unprecedented depth, why is Ivica Zubac their only center? Clippers believer: The depth itself isn't unprecedented. The combination of superstar talent and depth is. The Clippers are not Hubie Brown's Memphis Grizzlies, and they're absolutely not the Knicks. They had a well-rounded roster a year ago, and then they traded for Norman Powell and Robert Covington, two of the Blazers' starters. That's not normal! I'm never going to disparage Hartenstein or his importance to last year's Clippers, and I'll even admit that I will personally miss him. Considering how much talent remains, though, I can't say that the team will. Tyronn Lue can put Covington, Nicolas Batum, Marcus Morris and even Kawhi Leonard at "center" when Zubac is on the bench. Backup 5 is only an issue if you're closed-minded. Clippers skeptic: The lack of bigs is an issue unless you're small-minded. What if Zubac gets injured? What if he gets in foul trouble? I don't think this gaping hole will prevent the Clippers from being great, but it might prevent them from winning a title. I wouldn't be comfortable with this frontcourt in a potential Nuggets series, nor would I feel good about their chances in a hypothetical Finals matchup with Philadelphia. Even a team like Minnesota is going to present problems. Clippers believer: Minnesota? Show me all the games where Rudy Gobert punished switches in the post. As an opponent, you want to put long, versatile forwards on Karl-Anthony Towns and you want to space both of those guys out on the other end. Feels like a sweep to me. And while I don't think those other teams you mentioned can stop the Clippers, either, I'll be generous and say you might have identified one tiny flaw. There are big dudes who can defend the post and rebound available right now on the free-agent market. If this is actually a problem during the regular season, then the front office will address it. At no point in NBA history has it been easier to trade wings for bigs. Clippers skeptic: Sure, if any big dude will do. But the Clippers are going to want a big dude who is mobile, has some scheme versatility and brings something to the table on offense. That was the idea with Serge Ibaka. That's why they couldn't keep Hartenstein off the floor. Anyway, this isn't their only flaw. They're not going to get to the rim or the line as often as I'd like, and, against good defenses, they're going to live and die with contested pull-ups. Clippers believer: You're reciting years-old talking points. These aren't the Bubble Clippers, and since the 2021 Clippers were one of the best shooting teams of all-time, I'd hardly say the jumpers were a problem. Besides, the last time I saw Kawhi play a meaningful game, he attempted 13 free throws and the Clippers attempted 38 as a team. The game before that, the Clippers scored 44 points in the paint and Kawhi had 16 of them. You remember how they completely broke the Jazz's spirit by spreading them out and getting downhill over and over and over and over again? Yeah, we're going to see a lot more of that. Clippers skeptic: Hold on. It has come to my attention that there's some kind of large mammal in this room. It has a huge trunk. Tusks, too. Clippers believer: Clippers skeptic: Why are you laughing?! This is serious. If you don't help me, I could get severely hurt. Please do not underestimate the difficulty of getting over a serious injury, especially for someone who is already managing chronic pain … whoa, that was weird. As soon as I said that, the huge, tusked mammal just walked right out of the room! Thank goodness. Clippers believer: Ugh, this "Can Kawhi stay healthy?" narrative bugs me to no end. Freak injuries happen, and it's not fair to treat returning players like they're inherently delicate or more susceptible to injury going forward. It's particularly annoying in this case because Kawhi has already won a championship and had several legendary playoff performances since people started labeling him "injury-prone." Nobody in the league is more in tune with his body than he is. Clippers skeptic: Where'd all that come from? I didn't say anything about Leonard's ability to stay on the court. Maybe you're the one who's concerned about it. The curiosity: Moussa Diabate After the Clippers so successfully went small in the 2021 playoffs, they wound up playing with a traditional big man on the court for the vast majority of the following season. It wasn't a philosophical shift; they just happened to have a solid starting center in Zubac and perhaps the league's best backup center in Hartenstein. Much has been made of the fact that they did not replace Hartenstein with another proven center when he left in free agency. "We're not a prisoner to playing a backup 5," team president Lawrence Frank said before training camp, via The Athletic. If any team has ever been equipped to go centerless on the second unit, it is this one. But what if they've replaced Hartenstein with a 20-year-old on a two-way contract? Diabate, drafted No. 43 in June, is a 6-foot-11 energy guy with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, quick feet and enormous hands. He's supposed to be a long-term project, but he happens to be starting his career in the best situation you could possibly design for a switch big who can sets screens, roll hard and finish. Given that I'm not sure if Kennard, who led the league in 3-point percentage (44.9 percent) last season, will be an every-night rotation player, I'm not saying Diabate is likely to get in the way of the Clippers' long-awaited shift toward smallball. But it will be hilarious if he does. One more thing Morris, 33, has never been a prolific dunker. He dunked a career-high 31 times in 2012-13, and he managed only three dunks per season in 2019-20 and 2020-21. Morris was not pleased, however, to finish the 2021-22 season without a single dunk. He does not plan to make this a trend. "That's one of my goals, to get some dunks," Morris said at media day. Knee issues prevented Morris from doing much in training camp the last couple of seasons, so he "dropped about 10 pounds" before this one, he said. Now that he's lighter, maybe he can keep pace with his twin brother, Brooklyn Nets big man Markieff Morris, who threw down four dunks last season, five in 2020-21 and 20 in 2019-20. #BetclicELITE #PROB Victor Wembanyama | Season Highlights | Betclic ELITE 2021-2022 | LNB Officiel 41,741 viewsJun 30, 2022 362 DISLIKE SHARE DOWNLOAD CLIP SAVE LNB Officiel 28.4K subscribers Les meilleures actions de Victor Wembanyama sous le maillot de LDLC ASVEL. Zion's problem was adjusting to the NBA and figuring out how to maintain his body and health to be able to dominate on the court. Victor is good but I don't think he's transformative like Zion is. Seeing his fluidity on the court especially on defense, Victor will be a defensive presence instantly in the NBA but offensively he won't be as dominant because his body will need time to develop. He can shoot as many 3s and jumpshots as he wants but he will need some type of interior game. If he can master a sky hook like Kareem, he will be unstoppable. I would love to see him in San Antonio coached by Pop. 4 Andrew Andrew 4 days ago (edited) Scoot went a bit too hero-ballish early in the game, but I thought he settled down a bit and played more within the game after the 1st Quarter. French basketball player Victor Wembanyama plays for Metropolitans 92 in the LNB Pro A. He is a power forward who stands 2.20 meters tall and is regarded as one of the top prospects in Europe for his generation. He is the front-runner to be first selected in the 2023 NBA draft. Wembanyama also has a pretty impressive net worth, all thanks to his successful career as a basketball player. Victor Wembanyama Quick Facts Name Victor Wembanyama Birth January 4, 2004 Age 18 Birth place Nanterre, France Father Félix Wembanyama Mother Elodie de Fautereau Weight 95 kg Nationality French Height 2.19 m What Is Victor Wembanyama Parents Origine? Born to mother Elodie de Fautereau and father Felix Wembanyama, Victor Wembanyama can trace his origins to France. As his father is of DR Congolese, he holds mixed ethnicity. His parents are former athletes. Like him, his mother was a basketball player, while his father is a former long jumper. Victor Wembanyama was born in Le Chesnay, France, on January 4, 2004. There aren't many generational players out there. However, occasionally a player will be so superior to the rest of their peers that they are the unanimous top pick before the draft takes place. Zion Williamson, Anthony Davis, and Kyrie Irving have all been exactly that recently. However, there will be a superstar prospect with hype comparable to that of LeBron James in the NBA draft of 2022–2023. The NBA will be vying for this guy, 18-year-old French basketball star Victor Wembanyama, on draft night the following year. He is now in Las Vegas, where on Tuesday, October 4, and Thursday, he competed in two exhibition games against the G League Ignite and top prospect Scoot Henderson. As a kid, he experimented with playing goalkeeper in soccer and also enjoyed judo. However, basketball was a natural fit for him because of his stature (he is reported as 7'3'', 230 pounds, with a 7'9'' wingspan). He enrolled in the Nanterre 92 LBA Pro A basketball team's youth development program when he was ten years old, and in 2019, following several loan stints, he made his professional debut for them. The fact that Victor Wembanyama's older sister, Eve, plays basketball professionally shows that athleticism runs in the family. At the 2017 FIBA U16 Women's European Championship in France, she and France won the gold medal. Victor posted a picture of himself and his sister on Instagram at the beginning of 2022. Details On Victor Wembanyama Father And Mother Victor Wembanyama's father, Felix Wembanyama, was a long jumper, while his mother, Elodie de Fautereau, was a basketball player. Felix Wembanyama is of African heritage and a citizen of France. He excelled in the long jump and competed for his nation in several track and field competitions. His athletic parents inspired him to take up sports, who nurtured him in a supportive environment. He practiced judo and was a goalkeeper in football during his formative years. His mother decided to start coaching him in basketball when he was five years old, and it ended up becoming his main sport. Victor Wembanyama has been making his parents proud Victor Wembanyama has been making his parents proud ( Source : euroleaguebasketball ) According to reports, his mother is 1.9 m (6 ft 2 in) tall and used to play basketball. Wembanyama's father is a former triple jump champion who stands 2 meters (6 feet 5 inches) tall. Victor's parents, especially his father, encouraged him to prioritize track before basketball. There is a right way to run, according to Felix. And Victor learned those lessons from him. And for about a year, at the age of 10 or 11, he was a track and field team member. Although Wembanyama's mother is currently a youth basketball coach, it appears that she did not interfere in Victor's upbringing. She instructs young basketball players, ages 4 to 10, or something similar. But he never practiced with her for games. She doesn't necessarily want to participate in his performance. As a parent, she is aware that sometimes it's best to step back or avoid interfering too much in your kids' lives. Who Is Victor Wembanyama Girlfriend Or Wife? Victor Wembanyama does not have a girlfriend. And judging by his lack of a wedding ring, he does not have a wife. His relationship status is based on his social media presence. However, it is uncertain if the 18-year-old Wembanyama is single or dating anyone because he has not provided any information regarding his relationship status. He is undoubtedly popular among women, with many asking him to marry them in the comment section of his Instagram posts. At 18, he is in no rush to find a girlfriend or a baby mama. The only women who hold his heart are his older sister and his mother. Wembanyama may be dating someone, but he keeps his personal affairs very discreet, or perhaps he hasn't yet discovered his true love. He might announce the joyful news immediately after meeting his true love. Victor is currently single Victor is currently single ( Source : instagram ) His parents have been happily married for a long time, making Wembanyama believe in love. He is also an extremely kind man who greatly values women. He greatly admires his sister and mother, and his mother instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, demonstrating the excellent manner in which his parents brought him up. Additionally, there are no rumors that he has ever dated or been associated with other women. His youth could also be a factor in why he isn't already committed. At 18, he has over 279k followers on his official Instagram account. At this age, many people couldn't even decide what to do for a career, so it is truly a blessing for his parents that he is already well-known in the sports world and has a promising future. Without a doubt, Victor is the subject of many girls' dreams and crushes. His followers are eager to find out which lucky girl Victor will date in the future due to his height and self-assured demeanor, which most women find attractive in a man.
