T. Colin Campbell, PhD has been dedicated to the science of human health for more than 60 years. His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study — one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Times as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” — Dr. Campbell’s profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research.
Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm and was the first in his family to go to college, where he studied pre-veterinary medicine at Pennsylvania State University. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, and while completing his first year at the University of Georgia veterinary school, he received a telegram from a well known professor at Cornell University, offering a scholarship and research opportunity too good to turn down. And so he completed his education at Cornell University (M.S., Ph.D.) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry and toxicology. He then spent 10 years on the faculty of Virginia Tech’s Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition before returning to Cornell in 1975 where he presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences.
Dr. Campbell’s research experience includes both laboratory experiments and large-scale human studies. He has received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, and authored over 300 research papers. Throughout his career, he has confronted a great deal of confusion surrounding nutrition and its effects. It is precisely this confusion that he has focused so much on, in recent years.

I cant thank you enough, I keep learning everyday, I started my journey 15years ago when I became a vegetarian, them a vegan and the last 4 years in whole plant base life style. Reversed diabetes, high blood pressure, gastritis, acid reflux, constipation and lost close to a 100 lbs and at 65 feel better than I did when I was40.

I saw a video about 10 years ago on chemotherapy drugs. They asked an oncologist if his wife had cancer, would he give his wife those chemical drugs, and he said, "hell no." I never forgot that and if I ever get cancer I will never be treated with those chemicals. Radiation and surgery are the only two helpful things for cancer other than making sure your diet is really good.

To the lady from the farming family….it’s not about being anti farmer! It’s that like many other farmers, they can change and actually grow stuff. Lots of farmers have switched to plant crops and stopped tormenting animals for profit. 👌🏼 🌱

The joy of Life can hopefully help humanity to change their lifestyle to whole food plant based diet - and I Think that just 2 generations before us we were much closer to a kind of healthy blue zone diet with very little animal food, whole grains, lots of vegetables, legumes, berries, lokal fruit, mushrooms …. 🍀💚🐸

Husband being treated for colon cancer. I told surgeon and oncologist we are lowering animal products in his diet to limit IGF-1 and TMAO and what you’ve described. Surgeon told me no we want blood vessel growth during radiation. Oncologist says that doesn’t matter. I’m so confused.

The China Study and Whole are two books translated into Chinese which we need to promoted Chinese people to begin to educate them to go back to eating like their ancestors and not eating the highly processed industrial compounds we still call food. Nutrition science is essentially biochemistry and very few people study chemistry beyond the middle school fundamentals. Today, the Chinese are being fooled by the same machine that has created this current pandemic, that of over eating and yet being undernourished.

I tried a vegan diet when I was working from home and put on 20kg. Very conscious of grams of sugars/carbs and fat as well as sodium per 100 grams but it just did not agree with me at all from a physiological perspective.

In the 1960-73 era chemicals like DDT were sprayed on the animal feed and produce. Newer pesticides have been developed. In the food chains pollution gets amplified up the food chain. I wonder what role the prevalence of toxic pesticides and herbicides played as well.

The solution is obvious. In times like these we need to plant more shade trees in parking lots, increase drainage land in our concrete jungle, convert our wasteful lawns and backyards to permaculture food forest gardens landscapes with perennial drought and heat tolerant plants to provide shade and food year long for our family, friends and neighbors. It’s healthy and better for us mentality/physically and the environment. You will get your vitamins C from the food you grown and vitamin D from the sun. :)

So, It's not the amount of protein you're getting in your diet but its from where the protein comes from thats important. Cows milk has Casein protein, Plant proteins do not, so it doesn't matter how much protein you get but any kind of meat or dairy protein is bad. I've been on the fence about stopping eating animal flesh, and today I got my answer. My dog will be eating the hamburger I was going to have for dinner tonight

Colin, (I don't think you wish to be addressed merely as 'T' do you? )
With such fantastic, life-altering information to share, it is essential that you be heard clearly. We know that you are 88, and doing well, but you are a researcher, a guy who's always been inside his own mind.. what is needed for presentation like this is a clear and articulate voice, that projects and that can be heard without difficulty. Unfortunately, this is not the case here. You often slur your words or swallow them entirely, you don't move your lips very much when you speak and you have relegated your visage to a mere fractional corner of the screen, as if your viewers can see all the minut print in your screenshots of the data. Far better to present your face full screen and now and then to cut away for a diagram if you need to, to place the mic right beneath your face so that it picks up every last syllable.
Why do all this work for nothing? A word to the wise!

Eating plants is our 2nd line of defense only...not our primary.

Really happy to see this. I watched that show when it went out. I was new to the whole Vegan movement back then, but straight away I could see straight through what the BBC were doing, even with my lay person's limited knowledge at the time. I have since educated myself even further and I am clearer still that this a disgraceful example of false equivalence on the BBC's part. I wrote my first ever complaint to anyone that night to the BBC and I emailed Dr Campbell to offer support. Do these organisations think we are that stupid and we're not all waking up to the truth???

Funny, I watched the BBC documentary two nights ago and was really, really shocked with how Dr. Campbell was portrayed. It was like the narrator was trying to say there were limitations in Dr. Campbell's study....which there are in ALL studies. And that was the only thing he could focus on. The other two examples used in the documentary had clear lack of research supporting their claims, Dr. Campbell was building a case for the interference of animal based protein at a time where there was no evidence. It's not his fault if the academic community doesn't want to try to replicate his enormous study or try to test it different ways...they're too busy being paid by Sanofi to do genetics research instead. Terrible documentary BBC.

I remember watching that interview in Australia a couple of years ago, and having read The China Study and being a great fan of Dr. Colin Campbell, admiring him greatly, and having reaped the rewards from a mainly plant based diet, as a result of him and other like minded doctors and researchers, starting with Nathan Pritikin all those years ago, I was disappointed and disgusted by the attitude of the interviewer, his arrogance and lack of respect for Dr. Campbell. It was an interview that could have done a lot of good, but as you say the interviewer obviously had other intentions right from the start.

In those days, I was on a low-carb, high-fat diet, but after a while my blood cholesterol level rose to such a degree that my kidneys began to fail and I almost compromised the sight in my left eye. Maybe I'm a stubborn guy and that was a hard lesson that taught me to dig deeper before making radical changes in my diet. Now, I have been on a plant-based diet for several years and couldn't be in better health.

Five years ago I switched from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a Whole Foods Plant Based diet after watching Forks over Knives which shows how our food is processed. Within six weeks I lost 35 pounds (I was obese), stopped all diabetes medication as I no longer was diabetic after 20 years, stopped blood pressure medication as my blood pressure became normal (120/ 80), stopped taking medication for high cholesterol as it went from 210 to 135. I watched this debate with interest and there is no doubt that I believe the author of the China Study along with his half a century in the medical field won hands down.

I was diagnosed with an autoimmune which attacks both of my kidneys. About a year ago I adopted MODIFIED WHOLE PLANT BASED FOOD (MWPBF) for my diet. Guess what? After 1 month adopted MWPBF, from nearly below 30 eGFR went up to nearly 70 within 6 months. This prove to me that WPBF works in curing diseases such as an autoimmune. Thank you Dr. Campbell for sharing your knowledge and you have my vote.

I suffered all my life from IBS, skin allergies and stomach problems. The only thing that cured me after years of visiting dozens of doctors and trying all kinds of different medicines was a plant based diet. God bless all the doctors like Dr. Campbell, that educate and help people to restore their health. ❤️🙏

A carbohydrate addict is not addicted to whole vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. I'm a carbohydrate addict too. I successfully broke this addiction by going to a whole food, plant based, sugar free, oil free, salt free diet. A carbohydrate addict is addicted to processed foods. For the first time in my life, i feel empowered over my eating. When my eating disorder rears its ugly head, I feast/gorge on WFPD SOS Free foods, and in the process, still losing weight.

The counter argument only adressed processed carbs and sugar, which was denounced at the beginning. Fiber is the main key to the health of the gut, slows blood sugar delivery, normalizes digestion and stabilizes weight. Was hoping he would counter with that, but still great info.

I was in keto for two years and I did initially lose weight but it evetually stopped despite eating the exact same way then the weight started to creep up. I switched to plant-based after much research and immediately lost weight but to my shocking surprise my asthma disappeared (i'm 56 and was diagnosed at 23), my rosacea was gone after 8 years and my thyroid anitbodies dropped (Hashimoto's since age 23 as well) and my medication reduced by four doses in just over one year, my joint pain disappeared very quickly, eczema gone and I have energy through the roof. Working out is a joy now. Needless to say, whole foods plant-based is a non-negotiable as far as health and fat loss goes.

I cured my facial dermatitis and blepharitis around my eyes by eating a whole food, plant based, no oil diet over the last year....My skin is absolutely radiant....I am so grateful to be free from the horrific inflammation and itching around my nose, mouth and eyes....I just want to shout it from the roof tops....I want to help others who are suffering the way I did!! Just know it can take awhile, have faith in the process...but do it, you won't be sorry!!

This makes Dr. Campbell look like a super star. When you meet people in real life, those who are Keto and those who are plant based, your eyes will tell you which is so obviously better. I’ve done both diets. The reason Keto works once someone has Cancer is because it mimics fasting. Plant-based whole-foods will prevent the cancer in the first place.

7 months ago I started a plant based diet and since then I have not had 1 migraine. Got rid of the medication as well. I also suffered from Psoriasis for 27 years and I am completely clear. I know there are skeptics out there and that is perfectly fine, however it has worked for me - it is no joke.

As a youth, I was a bodybuilder and consumed far too many animal products with little fiber. As a result, I got diarrhea that lasted for months. A few months after that, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. From there, i did everything doctors recommended and just got worse and worse. I literally almost died from the drugs prednisone and cytoxan. Veganism saved my life

I see a lot of people here saying they felt awful when they tried keto. My wife also felt awful when she started meat base keto, I simply increased her electrolytes and it all went away. As for myself I had horrible fibromyalgia which lead to weight gain. Never was a junk food eater but love juice. I now call fruit my former drug of choice. After many years of suffering I found meat base keto after suffering with going plant base while fasting. I switched to only meat for a while and my fibromyalgia went away only after a couple weeks. I lost weight and now quickly rebuilding muscle doing less working out then before. I eat now a little vegetables just because I like them but I never feel as good. I used to go out of my way to get my drugs, always looking for a sell on fruit, or fruit juice, and fresh baked bread was my love. I can now walk passed them without the any desire for them. There is a reason vegetables and fruits only show up a short time out of the year...we don't suppose to eat them very often. Grow a garden and see how fast the food runs out and the amount of waste is unimaginable. Of course that's a different topic.

I remember Pritikin speaking about protein and he said it would be very difficult for a skilled dietician to create a diet where protein is too low. I don't even try for protein on whole plant foods and I happened to look and it's 17%. I do eat a lot of beans daily, though. Maybe I eat too many beans. However, a serving of beans with a meal I feel satiates me quite well. I can cut my beans substantially and still have at least 2 servings per day.
Concerning the graph correlating protein with cancer, I am hoping that the effect is less pronounced or nonexistent for someone eating zero animal protein such as myself.
I agree that people can be as healthy as those on some meat, a very limited amount, but I cannot control my intake with such 'moderation' and find elimination to work quite well. 5 years now whole plant foods.
I started the program to lower my total serum cholesterol at 210 mg/dl. It dropped quickly to 121 mg/dl, and stayed down. Side effect of the diet included control of high blood pressure after being taken off the medication, control of high resting heart rate after coming off the medication, and reduction of weight and waist size to ideal levels. All of this has stayed healthy for 5 years now.
I slack on exercise but do the occasional reverse lunges for leg strength.

The key for me, having explored both in the pursuit of health is that if you stray from the whole food plants based diet (say a weeks vacation) you might put on a little weight. If you stray from Keto for a week you need to undergo a painful withdrawal period, a sickness, for at least a week. Life is for living. Personally I will fast if I want to lose some fat, and I will get into ketosis doing that in a short time and for a one of two days.

Sustainable would be the whole food plant based for me. I was interested in ketogenic diet but it was too strict and have to watch carefully your macronutrients and carb intake. I find that many people into keto were in it for weight loss or body builders. Im looking for a lifestyle eating that is great for overall health and fuss free. Eating meat and high fats from oils will get you full fast and longer for people who IF but I often feel gross and sleepy.

I tried both. Plant based was better ONLY without salt oil sugar or refined food. Someone tell the keto guy to try it out and stop being so scared. I had to go against all my fears and I'm shedding weight A LOT faster than on keto and feeling amazing. Remember- no gluten free pasta!!! Whole plants only. Dairy messed be up big time on the Atkins and i did that on or off from twenty years!!!!

I juiced cruciferous vegetables, which are very low in carbs, for a while with no fruit because I’m diabetic, but i also continued to eat breads and pasta, and potatoes because I love them! My. Fasting blood sugar levels after taking 60-70 units of slow release insulin at bedtime, were always around but above 130. I also took straight insulin after every meal and always needed more if the meal contained carbs. Usually a lot more.
Eating carnivore my fasting blood sugar taking NO insulin is around 160 and stays between 130-170 all day. Given all of the dangerous side effects of high insulin, which I was NEVER warned about, beyond being unable to lose weight or keep it off when I did, I believe high insulin is a greater health threat to me these days than a consistent blood sugar level of 160. That’s converts to an a1C of approximately 7.5.
Taking up to 200 units of insulin a day, while eating carbs, my a1C was between 6.1-6.7. Eating carnivore my insulin intake is less than 10-20 units, and sometimes none, a day and an a1C of 7.5.
I’m sticking with carnivore for another month and we’ll see what happens.

37:54 He's absolutely right. I've met too many diabetics who have seemingly opposite diets yet have achieved the same thing.
A study using dna showed that some diabetics react better to a plain dairy meal than a plain white rice meal. And others better to rice than dairy (I think it was about 65% better on dairy, 35% better on rice). Dna differences seemed to account for these confounding results. (I'm quoting a TED talk discussing dna and nutrition. Sorry csnt remember title. But it probably contains these key words).
If you start out In America and go East, eventually you'll reach Asia. Yet if you go West, you'll also reach Asia. Diet can be the same.

Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm and says that he believed that dairy products were good for you. Then his own research surprised him when it showed the opposite. Pretty compelling.

Notice both these gents include reducing sugar in the diet -
"Tumors feed on glucose" - well I'd say it's quite a jump from that to say it's a cause of cancer... so his diet sounds good for cancer patients, but maybe not the rest of us.
Doesn't seem like they disagree on a whole lot, since the Atkin'ses apparently gave up on allowing whip cream & chocolate, something I remember from the 2000's

The Womens Health Initiative "low fat" group only had 2 - 3% less saturated fat intake compared to the regular fat diet, and an increase of only around 2 grams of fiber (what foods contain carbohydrates but no fiber? definitely not whole plant foods...) which is why they found no benefits for the "low fat" diet. In total there was around 7 - 9% total fat intake difference, but if you look at the correlation Dr. Campbell presented with plant fat sources and cancer, plant sources did not correlate. So the few % points of reduction in poly and mono unsaturated fats as well, will not cause a massive benefit, so really it's mostly comparing 2 - 3% less saturated fat intake between groups and finding no significant benefit. I mean c'mon, you can't expect such small changes to be significant. I actually liked Dr. Westman before he used this point. But using that study to prove this point is so disingenuous imo...

I spent years looking for the proper diet. After believing the paleo "science", I followed that for nearly ten years. The moment I caught on to this robust and encompassing science, I immediately changed to a whole plant exclusive diet, and am seeing startling results. I shied away from the thought of not having meat and dairy. But I find so much more satisfaction in my meals, as well as health, that I wouldn't even be tempted to return. And then there are the other benefits, both moral and environmental.

What a great man. Very diligent and an excellent communicator. I am biased because I enjoy the science quite a bit, too. I also we whole food-plant based and did it to fix my serum choletserol which was high at 210 mg/dl. Now, last reading was something like 125 mg/dl and it has been down there for almost 5 years. Side effects include normalized blood pressure and resting heart rate which were previously controlled with medication, and weight loss of 80 pounds from my high amount. Still down about 75 pounds 5 years later.
