I am 5 years in on fasting. 20x4 is my sweet spot for my working schedule and my training at the gym. My body composition is crazy. I walk around with abs all year around. When I see my co-workers eating breakfast at 7am & lunch at 11am I feel even more Empowered. They think I’m weird. I’ve been doing this for about 18 months. I’ve been able to eliminate my high blood pressure medication and my high cholesterol medication and feel amazing!!! Our bodies are miraculous healers...we just have to learn how to make it work effectively and efficiently. Thank you. Dr Eckberg for your wonderful information 💜🦋 286 Reply 25 replies @panpiper @panpiper 3 years ago I am keto and OMAD (one meal a day). In addition I do a one day fast (skipping one day's meal) a little more than once a week and a three day fast once a month. I've been doing it for a little less than a year. I must say the cumulative effect of this has been truly profound. My energy level is dramatically improved. My mind is clearer. Whereas a year ago a host of problems made it such that if I walked two blocks to go to the store, I would suffer days of pain in recovery (bursitis and old knee injuries). Now I can walk all over the place, every day, without issue. Serious acid reflux to the point where I would sometimes be awoken in the middle of the night choking on my own vomit, completely gone. Perpetual hemorrhoids and blood in my stool, gone. Nerve damage symptoms, reduced 80%. Major acne skin rash, 100% gone. In addition I have lost half the excess of waist measurement (from a reduction of visceral fat), and fully expect I will be at an optimum waist to height ratio within another year. 1.5K Dr. Sten Ekberg Reply Dr. Sten Ekberg · 101 replies @claytonbigsby9673 @claytonbigsby9673 1 year ago Excellent information! I'm currently on a 18:6 intermittant fasting regime and loving it. 78 Reply 4 replies @lafarrar8000 @lafarrar8000 4 months ago I LOVE reading about everyone's good experiences with autophagy and low carb/high fat eating. I am a 73 year old woman. I have been eating REALLY low carb since June, 2022 and have lost 40 pounds. But now I'm stuck. Recently, because of your excellent videos, I have dropped two meals a day and eat only one. BUT, I have a real problem knowing just how much to eat and what types of food. I had been eating primarily meat and fat (hard boiled eggs, bacon, fatty cuts of beef, etc.) but I have remained stalled for almost 3 months. I sleep 8 - 10 hours every night; I fast for about 18 - 20 hours a day; I now walk for over 250 hours each week. I also started adding leafy greens to my food regimen but that seems to have made no difference at all. I've been told that when my weight loss is stalled, it's probably because I'm eating too many carbs. Well, I have been (religiously) eating under 20g of carbs a day for a LONG time! Now I'm thinking that, at my age, I simply have to let go of my angst about losing weight and take delight in the advances I HAVE made. My skin has become amazingly "young." My sleep has gone from 4-5 hours a night to 8 - 10 hours a night. My walking has gone from 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, to 60-70 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week. My BP is consistently in the range of 105/68. I have more energy now than I did 8 months ago. AND, not to leave out an important piece of the puzzle, I had two pulmonary emboli in October, 2022. I was FORCED to slow down for a few months, and recover. It's only in the past two 3-4 that I have begun to walk again. So, KNOWING that I'm VERY lucky to be alive, perhaps my body REALLY is doing an amazing job at keeping me healthy! And THANKS to YOU and your amazing videos, I am learning SO much about how to grow younger every day!! The cardiologist says I will live to be 100+. I guess I ought to be able to lose that extra 20 pounds in the next 26 years!! Hahahaha! 52 Dr. Sten Ekberg Reply Dr. Sten Ekberg · 7 replies @sicpuppyblahblah @sicpuppyblahblah 2 years ago Love these videos. Thank you for all your videos that have really explained what going on in my body and why these lifestyle changes are working 😊🙏 41 Reply 3 replies @kaputamas2824 @kaputamas2824 2 years ago Thank you Dr. Ekberg! My whole life is changed because of this video. I never knew a health video can change my entire life. You now made me see why my mother was such a knock out model built until her old years. She was literary in atophogy every day of her life. She never ate before 1 pm and when she ate her first meal, it was black coffee and an egg. She worked on an empty stomach and worked slowly for hours. My mother never made us breakfast. Our breakfast was at 1 pm and we were all very fit. We only ate breakfast early on a Saturday if we were going on a family trip, like to the museum. My mother was a genuis at health care and I wish I never stopped following her lessons on eating. My stepfather also didn't eat until 1 pm. They never ate after 8 pm, unless they had their first meal around 5 pm cause they had a super busy day. I am now living like my ancestors. I will not be eating now before 1 pm anymore. I will be doing my work slowly so not to burn my protein from day before and don't burn out during fasting time. Today I am going until 3 pm in my fast to make sure that I am in autophagy. 496 Reply 15 replies @wendilayne6039 @wendilayne6039 11 months ago Fasting ages you backwards. Knowing the calorie intake as well. I have done fasting for about 3 weeks every year that I could, but the fasting consists of no food and no liquids from sunrise to sunset. I'm hoping to get back into fasting once my body is healed enough to do so. Good luck for all who want to accomplish this and meet your goals! Remember to be focused and mindful into what you usually do each day as well to help with the hunger pains, as well as eat a date and drink a cup of water to break the fast with. I have a travel mug of hot water going all the time and it keeps me from being hungry. You should have heard the way it terrified people! Everyone was like “you need to eat 3 meals a day, you’re destroying your body and your metabolism!” Now intermittent fasting is a thing. Go figure! The moral of the story is this - become a person who listens to your body. If you don’t feel like eating - don’t eat. If fasting for a few days makes you feel fantastic - fast. If you start getting muscle cramps, middle fast fatigue, or what not - stop fasting, don’t be stubborn about it. Moreover though, we need to stop blindly relying on conventional health ideas about health, and start taking responsibility for our own understanding of our body and the scientific literature on health. 17 Reply @0tf850 @0tf850 1 year ago Started this 2 weeks ago. I have been following the low car/keto and intermittent fasting way of life and have lost 19kg, which is fabulous. But and this is a bit scary for me, a few weeks ago a lost a dear friend at 55 years to a stroke and aneurism and she was following the low carb diet for several years now, also losing weight and feeling great! I have been experiencing fairly heavy palpitations especially during fasting, even during 18:6, but of course also when I do it longer. And my blood pressure seems to be swinging up and down a bit, within 10 minutes of taking it. Also my Cholesterol has gone up to 6.5 nnol/L, Chol/HDL Ratio being: 3.2 . Do I need to stop fasting? Or even stop the low carb lifestyle? Would really, really appreciate a reply please. Very unsettled at the moment. By the way, these the before mentioned issues happened before she passed away already. I eat within a 4-hour eating window from about 8 am to noon. Although it’s not low-carb on most days, I stay away from/significantly reduce sugar, white flour, and seed oils. Then at about 6 pm my eating window opens up again for a very light meal of homemade vegetable soup and one or two boiled eggs. No eating after that. I do take Fridays off and the occasional holiday for balance and sanity. My plan is inspired from ‘eat like a king for breakfast’ and circadian rhythms. And wonder if you've had questions about those who are achieving Autophagy in later life and whether they experience "growing pains". Obviously, they told us we had actual pain (or sensation) from changes to our body when we're young. At this point, as I'm fasting+feasting I notice sensation where past injury to my bones occurred in early life. Can I think that this is the body repairing? Am I being overly optimistic? I don't really have "aches and pains", but these sensations are more local to known bone damage from childhood. Any research on this? And info would be great! Love your videos! This means, I guess, that our calorie intake matches our calorie output. But it doesn't mean we are eating the 'best' diet, or even that we are healthy! There is so much more to it, and this clear explanation of autophagy is one example. I do wonder, though, when food intake is reduced, how you make up the caloric deficit, if you're one of those who doesn't need to lose weight? There's always more to learn! Thank you. The Bible says, Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit and then the devil came to tempt Him. He fasted for 40 days there but the thing that kept Him from temptation was because He had been in constant communication with The Father. He was able to gain strength through a consistent prayer life to The Father. He was human just as we are and through the fasting I imagine His intellect, His mind, became extra clear and sharp to deal with the Enemy. Through prayer, He did not have time to focus on being hungry. I would say that is my take on it. 1 Reply @jamesregan2181 @jamesregan2181 3 years ago Your videos are interesting and inspiring. This reminded me of how serratiopeptase breaks down dead/sick tissue back into AA. I took some last summer (while in ketosis 🙃) hoping it would fix my frozen shoulder faster and take the edge off some of the pain (as I was trying to avoid synthetic NSAIDs). It worked wonders for other conditions I didn't realize I had (sinus congestion, tissue calcification); but it only helped for a time, and for everything but the shoulder 😜. After about a month of daily supplementation, I'd start getting waves of trigeminal nerve pain - at which point I stopped the serrapeptase altogether. Perhaps fasting would've been a more "gentle/homeostatic" approach to breaking down the gunk in that capsule! 5 Reply @432HzUSA @432HzUSA 11 months ago Thank you very much for the valuable information you are sharing with our humanity. I just started learning about autophagy and the benefits of fasting a couple days ago and idk why it's not talked about even more. For me, I generally ate healthier than the average american for sure, but not 50g/day carbs - definitely more than that, and I jumped right into a 16:8 IF four days ago. Been going strong with between 16-17 hrs fast everyday. During my eating window I eat as I always did. Good amount of protein and healthy fats, and somewhat low carb. Does it seem like it'd be healthy to keep doing this everyday even though I never went low carb or keto? Also, I'm working out about 4 days a wk and I want to increase my fasting window to reach autophagy, but I'm also worried if I don't eat at least 150g of protein a day that I'll lose muscle. Most say to eat 1g per pound of body weight, and I'm at 197 right now (6ft). Guess I've still got a lot to learn but I'm excited to be starting my journey. 3 Reply 1 reply @r.pawlak5061 @r.pawlak5061 11 months ago Question: I am getting a Pilates Reformer with tower to exercise because I think it is the best exercise equipment to have, especially for women. Everything was alright but, when stopped the fast, the following 2 days i had only water with just a little bit of boiled rice, about a tablespoon, with a bit of butter and the rest of the day, only distilated water..The third day, as what I really craved for in the last days of fasting ,was salt, I ate some fermented vegetables, in salt...quite a lot,I admit, comparing with the fasting period... The next day, I ended up in the hospital emergency,as i had a magnezium deficiency. It was really bad. My body was contracting like mad and they put me 5 bottles of magnezium , calcium and salt ,i think,in my veins. They said it wasn t the fast, the mistake, but the salt I took after, from the pickles.Another doctor said it was the stress... Plus, 1 day per week where I sleep in, have my favorite breakfast, deep clean my house & then explore a new (to me) evening time place in the city. Anyways, the mixture for the 3 days per week consists of; apple cider vinegar, juice of a half lemon, a decent pinch of organic garlic, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, & cayenne powder...blended well with the stalk of one piece of celery, half avocado, half a kiwi fruit & a 2 cups of room water. Note! Pre-mix, store in the frig, & drink immediately after your scenic walk. Then immediately take either a hot shower or quick bath as your skin pore are open, & while consuming water to rehydrate. You will continue sweating after the shower or bath...Fantastic...do not fear, that is a good thing...just find a comfortable place in your a semi-cool room to kick back with your towel on and completely relax while checking your phone messages. Remember, your body's engine is still running and burning sugar stores during it's cool down period. After you are rested (no longer sweating), Take an extremely easy, quick cool wash up for bedtime, throw on your favorite lotion, eat a dinner you've already pre-prepared in your slow cooker with a decent amount of water, while watching a favorite movie or ongoing series, & Wow!!! In hour 36 of a fast for however long I can hold out and see results. So far a 20 year ordeal with Granuloma Annulare on my skin (inflammation) is fading - it started after a mysterious virus I got years ago and have had little success keeping it from spreading all over my body - possibly related to borderline thyroid as well. This is one of many fasts I have done but seeing if I can do a week or more this time. It is so important to keep doing fasts regularly. I have a cancer scare this month with a biopsy due, so am DETERMINED to turn these results around in order to avoid a hysterectomy or even a lesser invasive procedure. I have had fibroids for a few years with hormone irregularity and regardless of an immaculate diet avoiding anything to throw off hormones, I suddenly had tests results show cell change. So I started fasting in hopes that by the time the tests roll around this month it shows fibroids have shrunk, less body fat to lessen the bloat from hormones which is a real challenge in perimenopause, and certainly to reverse cell change. Lots of praying too with this. 8 Reply 2 replies @teresaberry1421 @teresaberry1421 12 days ago I started ADF last week bumped it up from intermittent fasting and yesterday during the middle of the fast my blood glucose went down to 58 my hands were ice cold I was extremely fatigued and had to go lay down. NO sugar (including fruit sugar) 2. Eat only natural foods (whole foods), nothing processed 3. Fast - for as long as you can. This will likely depend, in part, on how overweight you are. For example, if you are 5'10, 210, you can probably go a good 5 to 10 days. If you are 5'10, 165, perhaps 3 days. After the first "big" fast, make intermittent fasting your routine, e.g., eat two meals a day between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm (NO snacking), which means you are fasting 16 hrs every day. 4. Pray to be cured AND see yourself as ALREADY cured. If you are not a prayer, then see yourself as ALREADY cured, i.e., entertain NO negative thoughts - regardless of what the M.D. tells you. He/she is usually not your friend. 1 Reply @NBTCTennis @NBTCTennis 1 year ago I’m naturally slender and don’t want to lose weight. Namaste ✌️👁💓🧿 Reply @jennysanchez6153 @jennysanchez6153 1 year ago I appreciate all of your posts. But one thing that you’re forgetting that is so crucial to the problems that we’re facing today is that there is a mental health crisis going on. And this mental health crisis which is often times drug induced and not by your traditional drug but by physician prescribe drugs like Adderall and tramadol and codeine-based drugs. These drugs often prescribed to people just because the person says they’re fatigued or have a pain that’s not defined. Children are given this to study and are abusing it daily in their lives. And parents who give their kids and feta means what are they thinking? Completely changing the brain chemistry of your child. Would you give your child cocaine? Why do people think that these amphetamines raise the heart rate of their child? This class of drug was once prescribed for weight loss. And yet here we are giving it to children on a regular basis. And you have adults taking it and abusing it and then you have all of these other drug classes being prescribed. I’m telling you this because it doesn’t make a difference what people in just if the other side of the coin is drugs. You can eat as clean as you want but if you are taking these classes of drugs on a regular basis then your body is already in dire straits. We need investigations into what these drugs do prolonged use to peoples bodies. There is an increase in cancer and an increase in weight gain but there’s also an increase in pesticides that causes cancer and that we don’t talk about. There is an increase in chemicals being added to foods that we don’t talk about. What’s the point of any of this if we can’t get to the issues that make our lives so unhealthy. And those issues start with mental health and environmental health and then our mobility and what we ingest. You can’t work it backwards it doesn’t work. You can be the healthiest person and have a heart attack while jogging in Central Park at the age of 30. Stress and environmental factors and drugs do more harm than anything. I appreciate everyone trying to tell everybody that’s obese and has diabetes so they should Fast and stop eating sugar. There are plenty of reasons you should fast. But there is no reason on this planet that if you’re already anorexic and have a problem with drugs and have an eating disorder that you should be fasting. And the reason I say that is because there are more and more people that have mental health issues that listen to these YouTube videos. And these people have other issues and they need to solve those before they start thinking about fasting. Everybody wants a quick fix and back when I was in high school fasting was a thing. Don’t eat and you lose weight well tell me about it. Don’t eat and you’ll feel better or Dhoni and your sugar will go down. Come on 1+1 is two and that’s obvious. Yes there are other benefits to it but we’re not attacking the bigger problem and that is what I mentioned above. If you want to solve the problem you start with the person and what their problem actually is. You’ll be shocked to find that it doesn’t start with food but it starts with a persons emotional mental state. Once we start realizing that and seeing that we have an issue larger than the food chain then maybe we’ll make progress. It was just over 7 on my last test it should not be above 1 ideally under 0.3. The moderna vaccine gave me myocarditis which just exacerbated the heck out of my heart condition. I never had chest pains before the vaccine 8 months ago now I still have chest pains almost every day. Getting myocarditis 8 months ago and finding out how rough my heart was doing made me lose weight I was close to 260 eight months ago now I’m just under 185 pounds just losing all this weight has helped my sleep apnea and just sleep in general tremendously and as a result my blood pressure is the lowest it’s ever been but I still need to do way more so I am going to do a 6 day fast every 3 months from now on. I just wish I could get access to a sauna as well during my fast it would be amazing to get to use a sauna as well it would be very synergistic I would assume. I drink around 750ml of high quality olive oil weekly I eat around 150 grams of broccoli sprouts every day except for now on my fast of course. The only things I will be taking durning my fast is my blood pressure meds my ARB telmisartan and my Beta Blocker nebivolol but not my Statin and i will be taking three different supplements 600mg fisetin, 500mg quercetin and 5mg spermidine from a natural source not synthetic spermidine 3hcl. Reply @YitzhakFelsher @YitzhakFelsher 2 years ago (edited) Dr. Ekberg - OK, I understand autophagy now (after some research) but what I dont understand yet is HOW MUCH of an autophagy period is affective? Is a "one time" autophogy for 10-20 hours affective at all when it comes to all the benefits you mention? Obviously autophagy cannot be sustained as a lifestyle... so is it beneficial at all to do it only once or twice? Or is it something that must be practiced on a regular basis in order to have any benefits? Once a year? Once a month? For some reason all the "experts" avoid this important issue. If you dont know, its better you say you dont know, rather than just being vague and just saying "autophagy is good for you". I expect "experts" to be more practical and not so vague. Sadly, your great clip here, is just not practical. Reply @lizasouras_ @lizasouras_ 4 months ago Does this help people who have had concussions? In a randomized control crossover trial, eight males were administered different protein/carb beverages after completing a 36-hour fast. A marker of autophagy activity (LC3II/LC3I ratio) was measured during the fasting vs. the non-fasting periods. A decrease in autophagy occurred when the men sipped on the protein-rich beverages (leucine-rich whey or soy-based protein) but not the carbohydrate-rich ones. The researchers noted that these findings align with rodent studies where branched-chain amino acids tend to suppress autophagy during catabolic conditions (like fasting). Glucose, on the other hand, does not impact autophagy." Old, damaged proteins, microbes and amyloids are cleaned up and recycled 24 hours - your glycogen reserve becomes depleted which triggers the body to begin using ketones as an energy source. Stem cells cause the gut to heal, inflammation such as arthritis goes down. autoimmune conditions start to improve. The heart benefits greatly and the brain makes new brain cells 48 hours - undifferentiated stem cells that really don't have a purpose begin to increase greatly, so wherever they are needed is where they go to do the most repair. They are great for making a person look young LOL. Tumors shrink and there is a decrease in the risk of certain cancers. Mitochondria production is increased 72 hours - even more stimulation of stem cell production and better immune function occurs. Not cool to do a 72 hour fast but every once in awhile. Not eating is simulating starvation, and if you are constantly going on long term fasts, you are signaling your emergency anti-starvation measures all animals have to kick in, just like if you go on too many yo-yo diets. Fasting is not as bad as dieting, because dieters go as long as they can, but the downsides are numerous. Nobody talks about this. The reality is that you lose muscle because if you are not eating protein, you body has to take it from lean body mass, true fact. Dr. Stephen Phinney says that in just about every person who does long term fasting, tissue loss starts to accelerate after 48 hours. We have been fasting for millennia, but it's not something we instinctively do, like eat. It's forced upon us in nature. My view is if there is no instinct to do something, then you don't have to do it. Autophagy may have its benefits but I am very reluctant to believe in all the benefits that are claimed at the start of the video. The secret to a long healthy life is consuming one good nutritious meal daily with lots of exercise. I started following this method a few years ago via intermittent fasting after a severe battle with Pancreatitis.
