The Real Skinny on Fat is a 9-part documentary series that uncovers the truth about FAT and how it affects your health, your weight, and your aging.

Autophagy is a word we’ve been hearing a lot recently, and I have a strong feeling that this is just the beginning. On a recent trip to Tokyo I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, the very man who introduced autophagy to the world and won a Nobel Prize doing so in 2016! (You can find that interview here:
• Rare Interview wi... )
Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi spoke honestly and humbly about our limited understanding of the full potential autophagy has, claiming he believes we only understand about 30% of what it can actually do.
That is an exciting prospect to consider, especially having come across some remarkable findings. Having the opportunity to talk to various individuals who are on the cutting edge is of course key in learning more and exploring this science. I find it extremely enlightening to learn from those who’ve grasped an understanding of what it can do for our health. Studying autophagy and its benefits for us is nothing short of a miracle, and something I want to share with all of you.
In today’s video, taken from our 9-part docuseries “The Real Skinny on Fat,” I talk to Dr. William Dunn, PhD, a professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Florida and one of the most respected authorities on autophagy. He has been studying the process for more than thirty years. His insight is truly fascinating and worth watching to begin to understand the science and benefits of autophagy and how you can activate it.
I hope you enjoy the interview excerpt and please be sure to post your comments and questions below. This is definitely going to be a subject we will be devoting a lot of time to, so expect to see more videos on this channel. I’m 59. My wife and I started IF two years ago. To begin with, it was pretty tough as I was basically a sugar junky! I persevered and gradually got to 18/20hrs fasting. Two years on, I lost 18kg/3.5stones and IF has become a life style. I run 8.5k 5 days a week on empty stomach and I’m faster and more agile than before started IF. We both have bags of energy and plenty of focus that never thought I possessed! For my 60th birthday in March, I’m planning 10k run every day in March followed by a marathon at the end of the month. We now do a 48hrs fasting the last weekend of every month to maximise autophagy. IF has been a game changer for quality of life and longevity.

I began fasting at 8 hours and then increased by one hour each day, with only the occasional slip . Now I’m at 18 hours with a 6 hour eating window. I’m working towards 36 hours fast. I feel fantastic

6/29/21 my autophagy & cell cleaning occurred at “20hr fasting -4hr eating window” I’m a graduate of “16-8” In 2019 & dropped 18Lbs. Today Since doing longer fasts Or 1 meal a day, Within 3 days the redness in my face vanished by doing “20-4” Amazed😊.

At 57, I was fit and about 220lbs, athletic. But, I was feeling old. Previously I rarely ate breakfast when I started IF. Doing IF I immediately began to feel better. Im terrible at fasting and often cheat in the afternoon. Occassionally, I will fast all day. The improvements I have noticed are numerous. Skin, memory, joints , attitude. I feel decades younger. I recommend to all.

The best analogy is just imagine that grocery stores are all closed for a month. What would you do. First you would finish off all the food in your refrigerator. Then you would start eating all the leftover foods, thereby clearing your fridge and house of all the old and outdated food. This way you have exhausted your old and stale food. Now your house is ready for fresh food to come in. That is the best layman's analogy.

I happen to work at Penn State, so that was kind of neat hearing that the Dr. started his journey there. I have been using a keto diet and IF to control my type 2 diabetes now for around a year. I have lost 22 pounds, back to my proper weight, and have been able to stop using all medications to control my diabetes. It really did not take long at all to get used to fasting, I don't find myself getting hungry ever. I am just starting to research how autophagy works and how I may benefit from it. Thanks so much for the informative video.

Great interview Miss Whittel. I'm wondering if Autophagy is helpful in PREVENTING diseases? I think it would be, since the cells are cleaning themselves. It's fascinating and a little counter intuitive that you want Autophagy at times and you don't want it at others. Great stuff.

I've been intermittent fasting for two months now and I don't find myself hungry when I wake up. I don't feel the hunger I used to have at all. My body has adapted to change quickly between burning glucose and fat, so my body doesn't need to remind me of eating often. This is one of the best reasons to have IF as eating pattern. I was just moderately overweight 52 Years/176cm/79,5kg and now I'm 73,5kg and feeling great mentally and physically. IF triggered growth hormone put me into lifting weights and IF is giving me feedback which foods are better for me, so I'm in a positive loop because of IF. I'm feeling (and looking) like 40 Years old again.

I think the gateway to Enjoy fasting is by eating a Ketogenic life style. Hunger is suppressed and you stay satiated so 1 meal a day is really easy to achieve and when you want to fast for longer periods your body is more adjusted to it. Great topic!

OK, here is my two-cents:
Today I fasted for 18 hours. I have done a total of 20 pull ups. At the end of the fast, and in of a twenty minute period, I did 150 jumping-jacks, 100 push-ups and 100 squats. I then drank a tonic of ice water, turmeric powder, matcha powder, ginger powder, cinnamon powder, stevia liquid and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This was followed with a huge salad and 4 soft boiled eggs. Multiple cups of tea all day, either Matcha or Dandelion Root. Had some Milk Thistle with one of those cups of tea. During the eating window I snacked on 7 handfuls of Pecan nuts and two Brazil nuts. For dinner I had chicken soup with finally chopped broccoli as a topping. For dessert Lily’s chocolate. Later I will take vitamin supplements Zinc, Magnesium, Potassium, D3, K2, B-Complex, and C. Next is 8 hours of sleep. Well, 4 years ago I started my life style change when I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation. I am 65 and my doctor is unable to detect Atrial Fibrillation. In closing, eat well rest well, keep hydrated, exercise moderately. Real food is medicine. The tools to optimize your health are HIIT, IF, cold showers, saunas, red light exposure, and meditation ( controlled breathing) Well there you have it, the things that are working for me.

I’ve fasted most days of my life at least until 4:00 pm for years, as a religious practice. I feel much better when I eat once a day and later in the day. I do this most days, but certain days when I want to eat with my family, I eat however I want. I am 60 and I feel great.

Quincy Jones opined “We’re saving our own lives” This is why scientists must be free to explore a Great Blue Sea, without political or economic priorities. Early Cancer research blossoms into a profound perspective of the process of life. Dr Dunn is “Knock-knocking on Heavens Door” of metaphysics. Bravo

To your discussion at the 9:00 minute mark, the more consistently you fast, the easier the transition period becomes. It may take months, but eventually your body will adapt. I can feel the changeover now when my body switches to other sources of fuel, and it only lasts literally a minute or so. The other thing that takes a long time, but eventually you'll adapt is to be active while fasting. I have been doing it long enough now that I can engage in vigorous physical activity while fasting and still have plenty of energy. This was not the case early on.

Can you trigger autophagy through 18:6 if during the feeding window you are eating to gain weight (ideally lean muscle) as part of weight restoration in recovery from illness? Or does weight gain in many form prevent autophagy and it's anti aging effects?

Years ago I did a 5 day water fast without doing low carb first. It was so incredibly painful and I couldn't focus on anything because of extreme hunger. My entire body ached especially my lower back which I had injured a few years before. I'm trying intermittent fasting now to make it less painful and becasue I take supplements every day. Would going low carb help with the pain?

Hmm, I do an alternate day fast and am not, at all, "starving when I wake up." I assume because I have a fat-burning metabolism and am on a ketogenic diet. The human organism has spent a lot more time going hungry between meals than it has spent having 3 meals a day. Overall, I enjoyed the interview Naomi.

i started IF two months ago, i lost 11+kgs, my skin improved, my nails and hair grew fast and stronger, my heartburn gone, felt amazing and most importantly i reversed my insulin resistance. so much healthier/better focus during the day. I gradually started, firstly i fasted for 18 hours, then 20, then i do OMAD- 23 hours fasting and 1 hours feasting. My gut problems gone&i didnt experience hunger. I drank bulletproof coffee with some good coconut oil and drank 1tbsp apple cider vinegar when i get up/and while i'm eating. I quit sugar and went low-carb, i tried to get into ketosis but i don't know if i achieved it or not.
i stopped doing IF suddenly after losing 11kgs, just for experimenting, curious about what will happen. I introduce sugar and carbs back to my diet -in moderation, instantly i suffered gut problems, poor digestion, dry skin and pretty bad breakouts. so, i'm back with the OMAD diet, i'm feeling awesome, my problems are no longer here and still continue to loose weight. Highly recommented. 🤚🏻

For decades I've read about detoxing with conventionals saying it's fantasy. The body does that anyway all the time. Yet no doubt about the curative value of fasting etc. Looks like the answer lies in autophagy increasing massively with fasting etc. Must happen in normal circumstances too surely and to some degree.

Just watched a video on autophagy by Dr. Fung. He says it takes 24 to 48 hours of fasting for autophagy to kick in and that as soon as you consume protein, autophagy is turned off.
If this is true then the only way to get any benefits from autophagy is to water fast for several days just to activate autophagy and then eat no protein in order to keep from turning autophagy off.
My question, how many days of autophagy do you need to see benefits if you are doing it for general health purposes ?
How often should you do it for those purposes?

The cell eats parts of itself, the damaged parts? Won't we eventually be left with shrinking organs with the cells that don't divide.. like the heart? What's the benefit in getting rid of damaged mitochondria and organelles of the heart? What affect does that have on the organ? Are we just assuming it makes it healthier or does it actually?

if one is fat adapted fasting becomes very easy. Your body very happily will utilize your body fat for fuel. If you are a sugar/carb dependent for energy you may have a awful time adapting to fasting.

So at what stage would a tumour be before it would turn on autophagy for its own benefit? So many people fasting, but are they all certain they don't have a new tumour? This interview doesn't answer that uncertainty.

You can't turn a tumor cell's autophagy on or off through fasting, the cell itself regulates it and does what it wants to do.

Question - if someone is practicing an IF lifestyle and triggering autophagy and unknown to them have cancerous cells in their body, are those cancer cells going to grow and spread faster than they would normaly?

Problem is that u need between 48-72 hs of fasting to get the benefits that this guy is talking about. If you are on ketos it could be reached already after 24hs. I like IF, but I'm not going to 48hs without food

Turn on autophagy for aging.
Shut down autophagy before blood supply gets to tumor.
Autophagy helps the heart, liver any organs or any cells not dividing, kidney most active and helped. Needs to be studied

He is very interesting but he said one thing that is concerning. If you have cancer you want autophagy turned off to decrease the possibility of metastasis. Most people will not know if they they have a cancer until it is well advance. As a result following this recommendation could hasten your demise in early cancers.

I do wish all these doctors that discuss autophagy would give us a thumbs down or a thumbs up to it if you don’t know for sure if you have cancer cells in your body. It seems like it would be very dangerous to go into autophagy if you even think you might have cancer cells in your body. Since most of us will never know that, it seems like it should be avoided altogether. Think how many people watching these videos might decide they want to turn on autophagy to renew their cells in order to improve their body and their health, but might be harmed from doing it. And they have no idea that they are potentially endangering themselves because the dangers of autophagy are really never discussed on these videos. Something needs to be done about that.

I'm sorry to disagree, but this guy is making out that someone discovered autophagy in recent times. I was taught, as a student nurse, in the 60's about autophagy. I leaned about it in my biology o levels. There's is absolutely nothing new about this. While I love the work that has been done on it, and appreciate ways to boost it, It. Is. Not. New. Knowledge. It has been understood for thousands of years. No need to gild the lily.

So, I don’t think that fasting for day or interminably not activate autophagy) in your body present mechanisms which before “self-eating” balance your level of amino acids and other biomolecules, and really fantastic thought that autophagy is saving mechanism 😃😃😃😃for your cells, this process out of your view,
