5 Steps To Prevent Diabetes-type 2

 5 Steps To Prevent Diabetes

When it comes to health matters few things annoy me as much as skewed information, published by the mainstream, designed to scare the living daylights out of people… or giving them false hope.
A case in point is a recent article that started with this opening paragraph: A breakthrough discovery moves researchers nearer to finding a cure for type 2 diabetes and could spell the end of insulin injections.
(Before I continue, it’s important to highlight that the ‘breakthrough’ the article referred to was yet another expensive pharmaceutical drug… so, no surprise there!)
First of all, not all type 2 diabetics use insulin injections to control their blood sugar. In fact, by the time a type 2 diabetic resorts to insulin injections the disease is already very far advanced.
Yes, it’s true that type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease. However, in the majority of cases, it is entirely possible to control type 2 diabetes symptoms and prevent diabetes-related complications, especially in the early stages.
And secondly, we don’t need a ‘cure’ for type 2 diabetes because it is one of the most preventable diseases out there. Telling people that researchers are moving closer to finding a so-called cure, also creates the impression that there is very little one can do to avoid a type 2 diabetes diagnosis… and that simply is not true.
If anything it’s a clever con!
In fact there are five easy steps you can start taking today to keep diabetes at:
  1. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid processed foods and sugar (also steer clear of artificially sweetened foods and drinks). Focus on eating plenty fresh fruit and vegetables, and try to follow a Mediterranean Diet as far as possible — rich in healthy saturated fats, fish (omega-3s), whole grains,  fruits, vegetables, legumes and olive oil.
  2. If you’re overweight, lose weight and make every effort to maintain a healthy weight… a low glycaemic load diet is one of the best ways to achieve this.
  3. If you smoke, stop. Quitting smoking is the single most important thing you can do for your health.
  4. Drink alcohol in moderation, and make red wine a favourite tipple. Resveratrol, a compound found in red grape skins, is a well-known powerful antioxidant and a real anti-ageing superstar. It can boost your brain power, protect your eyes and your heart, and it could help to prevent cancer, too. Recent research concluded that resveratrol significantly reduced fasting glucose, insulin, haemoglobin A1c and insulin resistance levels in participants with diabetes.
  5. Take plenty of regular exercise. Not many of us like to hear this, but it’s a hard truth: Regular exercise helps prevent heart disease, it lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and the risk of stroke and heart attack… and since type 2 diabetics are up to five times more likely to develop heart disease or stroke than healthy people, the benefits of exercise are obvious. It will also help you to lose those extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight.
Considering that in the UK more than 2.7 million people, aged 16 or over, have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and that this figure is expected to rise to 4.6 million by 2030, I think it’s absolutely imperative to get the message across that there already is a cure for type 2 diabetes… It’s called prevention.
Here’s to saying no to diabetes without using drugs,
