In a master artist’s hands, like your’s, Ray, I love that the violin can be both brightly evocative and hauntingly retrospective at the same time. The emotional depths of each expression are like the great storytellers of history. I can feel my heart beat slow or the sublime rush of anticipation with each movement of the bow. ❤

The way he plays the violin is like telling a story, and this video makes me curious about the body and the ending of those stories 😂. And I don't know why but my heart suddenly felt warm when I saw him wiping the sweat at the end of the video. I don't know if one day I will be able to hear him play violin in person, but I will be very happy if that day comes. ❤

Your articulation and "air time" are essential to your style. Plus your ridiculously sensuous tone (but only when appropriate) and dramatic sense are maybe the most compelling things to me. You put 1 toe on the 'don't exaggerate' line, then pull satisfyingly back! Is one of your parents Hungarian?

Do you know how I got the Wieniawski? It's far fetched: from that video with Twoset where one starts playing a famous piece, and the other two compete and try to finish the excerpt flawlessly. So, Brett played the opening chord of Dvořák, Ray immediately plucked his Ray Major chord but then paused and said it could be two pieces. That made me wonder what the other possible piece was so I did some research and voilà, Wieniawski.
I wrote it in a better way yesterday but maybe I'll still get a heart?

here's my results:
"I didn't know the piece": 1 (Wieniawski)
"I should have recognized it but I didn't": 5
"I recognized it": 14
Monti: I thought Ravel Tzigane (Shame)
Bach: I didnt understand that Ysaye was finished
Bruch: I am so ashamed by this... I thought Beethoven 3rd
Bazzini: I know the tune, I never ever remember author nor title
SaintSaens: simply didnt come to mind
(time pressure is terrible, it makes you say stupid things...)
I give myself a generous 7 out of 10 but I deeply disappointed myself
Anyways: very nice quiz video! I love the fact that you proposed the same piece two non-consecutive times to trick players! well done!

Although his generous offering reveals his less serious and warm character, one should never underestimate the extremely rare virtuosity and the impeccable technique he possesses.

This is my favorite Violin Concerto and this performance and recording may be my favorite to date. The soloist and orchestra under Mr. Varga's conducting are as hand in glove. The playing of Mr. Chen is powerful, passionate and mature for a young man. I am so impressed that Ray Chen is deserving of being at the top of Olympus with the who's who of violinists. So impressive ! I love this in its entirety. Everybody all in all the way through. Kudos everyone and especially Ray Chen amd Maestro Gilbert Varga for a historic work of art. Thank you !!!

I simply cannot fathom how many tens of thousands of hours of practice it takes to be able to learn and play every single note from memory and with supreme virtuosity as the lead violinist in a 36-minute violin concerto composed by Tchaikovsky. How is that even humanly possible? I'm absolutely in awe.

This piece is one of my all time favourites but usually when played, I feel the orchestra falling to temptation to pick up speed and rush it. Here we have an excellent orchestra and a bravo performer who not only shows power and passion but real discipline in playing at the right speed. He uses those extra parts of a second to inject additional passion and power into his notes when required.
Bravo Mr. Chen. You brought me to tears every time I listen to this. I keep coming back to it after watching other versions.

I have listened to so many players and I listen to your solos the most because you have a unique quality that I have not heard ...in this lifetime or perhaps the others I have lived. It is magical. It is as if I am in the time period and I transcend to that magical arena of the composer and musician creating this beautiful melody.. And so, in an astrological transit (they are so many in our lives), reuniting with a forgotten artistic part of my soul and.. through Vivaldi, I bumped into this... Ray Chan.... and now I hear 4 seasons in my head all day long...and maybe finally I get why they make these faces when playing...

Dear ray, it's me, Kevin Kumars apprentice, like anakin Skywalker and obi won kenobi...everything is a form of power. Seeing, breathing, thinking, are all forms of power. Do you see what I mean? Your vibrato, your bow grip, are both forms of power. What does your power tell you to do? Listen to your power.

Hello, first of all, congratulations for your talent! even if it is a compliment that you must hear regularly, I would like to address it to you. just a question about the contact point of your index finger on the bow. Have you changed position since then? it seems that from now on you are on the first phalanx in contact with the wand.

The best version i saw was that of David Oistrakh with the Moscow symphony. David was the master and the conductor and orchestra followed his pace. There is a tendency to be sucked into the frenzy of this composition but David's performance was in full control and he really gave emphasis where it should be.

do each conductors have their own unique hand gestures like baseball umpires or something? Like I couldn't tell you, other than like a pianissimo, what he was conveying. It seems like you would have to be a group for many years to be able to understand each person's unique weaknesses and strengths to play effectively together. idk maybe i'm over thinking it.

Ray Chen is a violin prodigy, as is another girl prodigy to whom he recently gave advice on how to play in front of an audience (you can watch the video on YouTube). The young prodigy is called Karolina Protsenko and she has just played a Mendelssohn concert solo with an orchestra at just 15 years old for almost 30 minutes in front of the audience (she knew all the notes by heart). She received thunderous applause from the audience. Karolina played with her new $45,000 violin (the old one cost $3,000). One day, she will be able to buy a $2 million Stradivarius. Violin geniuses deserve to have the best instruments.

It has certainly been my favorite violin concerto for over fifty years now. I just love everything about it! And Chen is great here, so thanks to him for performing this masterpiece, well, so masterly! Thank you, Mr. Tchaikovsky, too.

Ray Chen is among one of the first worldwide renowned concert violinists to utilize the latest technological advances of the internet in a most personal manner.

I bet sometimes the other violinists look at the soloist at rehearsal and think, “Why can’t that be me?” Then come showtime they be like “So glad that’s not me!” It’s such a vulnerable position!

I feel every note and transition and everlasting movement of this song.
