Maybe bigger. For reasons that are too long to explain in a comment here. This will change the trajectory of humanity. Read up on it if you’re not familiar. Wild. Edit: I should clarify - the whole starship system is the step jump. Not the catching per se. The catching, while incredible, is just one step required for the whole system to work. The system is the real revolution. 7 Reply 5 replies @cqwiii 12 hours ago "If only spacex could live up to the safety standards of boeing" -The FAA 21 Reply 6 replies @vegetashairline3060 4 hours ago Brother parallel parked a rocket ship Reply @Ajax-0137 13 hours ago r/enoughmuskspam in shambles 161 Reply 12 replies @thebearded4427 12 hours ago When people talk about the possibilities of AI computing, this is exactly the kind of things I'm expecting to see more of! So there'd be at least a couple hours between a booster landing on the tower to the ship coming back. Still not enough time currently, but I think that's the idea. They'd move the booster then land the ship. 4 Reply 1 reply @davidgermain 7 hours ago (edited) loving the excitment youhave for this. they swing the booster out of the way and put it in one of the pads. by the time the payload part has done its job the booster will be off the pad. 3 Reply @java4life415 3 hours ago (edited) I was in a hotel there on vacation today and I had no clue this was happening. Woke me up at 7 AM. My hotel room (with a balcony view on a high floor) was shaking like crazy and felt that sonic boom when landing. It was crazy. I cried knowing I witnessed history 1 Reply @DarkTranqz 7 hours ago Super Heavy is somewhere around 220 tons dry without the hot stage ring, and probably had 20-30 tons of propellant left in the tanks, so it definitely was not 500 tons. Also, when the booster reaches it's highest boostback velocity at about 26 kilometers altitude, it was doing 4400 km/h, which is a little over Mach 4 at that altitude. Then, when the engines fire to cancel out the booster's energy for the catch, it's doing Mach 1, and decelerates all the way down to 2 km/h by the time the chopsticks make contact. 13 Reply 2 replies @deankay4434 7 hours ago This a huge step forward allowing engineers to review data, examine components, control actuators and heat tabs epoxied in places the size of a quarter. Designed to melt at a known rate at a predictable temperature range. This complex catch is a further step to carry more weight into space at a cheaper cost. Reusable rockets without tons of heat shield and certain cooling systems are not used. Lower total weight carried at 17,500 MPH to escape the earths atmosphere with 3 times the power. Amazing! 5 Reply @kevinmcquade1688 7 hours ago They don’t need to catch the starship immediately after the booster. But then again, airplanes fly at 35,000 which is around 7-8 miles in the air. The booster is at 23KM which is over 23 miles. And the main ship is at 143 KM so that’s 88.8 miles in the air. So think of traveling a hour and twenty minutes in a car @ 60mph. That’s all it would take to get to that height in the sky. Kinda wild. Now look at that on a map and it don’t seem that high up in reality to how big the earth is. This 5th test launch of the Starship after the 4th successful recovery launch of the Booster with a precision of 5 millimeters (0.005 m), now surprises with SpaceX Tower Chopstick mechanical arms to catch the Starship booster rocket on the launch pad as a stage to reuse its use several times a day.
